Health coverage for Louisiana neighbors

Could Medicaid be right for you?

Medicaid helps eligible Louisiana residents get health care. Depending on the program, coverage may include doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, preventive care, and other services.

Adults & families

Adults ages 19–64 with limited income may qualify, including people who work and adults without children.

Children & pregnancy

Children under 19 may qualify for Medicaid or LaCHIP. Pregnancy coverage is also available for eligible applicants.

Older adults & disabilities

Other programs may help people age 65 or older, people with disabilities, and some neighbors who have Medicare.

You can apply year-round. Medicaid applications are accepted throughout the year. You do not have to wait for Marketplace open enrollment.

Not sure whether you qualify? Income limits and other requirements vary by program and household. Ask for help exploring your options. The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) makes eligibility decisions.

Personal support. A clearer next step.

You don’t have to apply alone.

Feeding Louisiana’s Medicaid assistance page connects you with a coordinator for free help understanding and completing your application.

Talk through your situation

Staff can help you understand the application and what information you may need to provide.

03 / FOLLOW THROUGH

Watch for LDH notices

After applying, read your mail and respond to requests by the deadline. Save copies of what you submit.

Submitting the assistance request form does not submit a Medicaid application or guarantee coverage. LDH processes applications and decides eligibility.

Before you get started

A little preparation can help.

Gather what you have so a coordinator can help you identify what else may be needed:

  • Names and birth dates of people applying.
  • Household income information, such as recent pay stubs.
  • Information about current health insurance and any coverage available through a job.
  • Any Medicaid notices or requests for information.

Missing something? You can still request help and ask where to start.

Prefer to apply directly?

You can apply through Louisiana’s official Medicaid portal.

For an application status update, check the official portal or contact LDH using the instructions in your notice.

Already have Medicaid?

Read your notices.
Protect your coverage.

  • Keep your contact information current. Update your mailing address and phone number with Medicaid.
  • Check each notice. If LDH asks for renewal information or documents, respond by the deadline.
  • Keep a record. Save copies of documents and confirmation numbers.

Questions about a renewal letter or a coverage closure? Use your notice or the official LDH website to contact Medicaid promptly.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Let’s make getting help easier.

Does Feeding Louisiana charge for application help?

No. Request free Medicaid application assistance through Feeding Louisiana’s website.

Can I work and still qualify?

Yes, some working adults qualify. Eligibility depends on income, household circumstances, and other program rules. LDH reviews your application.

Can my child qualify if I do not?

Possibly. Children and adults have different eligibility rules. Ask about Medicaid and LaCHIP for your child.

Does SNAP or WIC enrollment mean I already have Medicaid?

No. These are separate programs. Request help with a Medicaid application through Feeding Louisiana.

Who can tell me my application status?

Check the official Medicaid portal.

What if I lose job-based coverage or do not qualify for Medicaid?

Other health insurance options may be available. SWLAHEC’s Navigators for a Healthy Louisiana offers free help exploring Marketplace coverage and enrollment options. Ask promptly about deadlines after losing coverage.

How can I use my coverage to stay healthy?

Ask your health plan or health care provider about covered checkups, screenings, and other preventive care. Check which providers accept your plan before scheduling.

What if my coverage ended or I disagree with a decision?

Contact LDH promptly and read your notice for the reason, next steps, and any appeal deadline. Do not wait to ask about your options.
