Louisiana Anti-Hunger Coalition · Senior Food Boxes

A monthly box.
A little more support.

Louisiana’s Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) provides nutritious USDA foods to eligible neighbors age 60 and older at no cost.

Also known as the Senior Box Program. Your regional food bank can explain eligibility, enrollment, and local pickup locations.

Supporting Louisiana seniors

Nutritious food.
Support close to home.

CSFP helps older adults supplement their diets with a monthly package of USDA foods. The box adds useful staples to the kitchen and helps stretch a limited grocery budget.

Feeding Louisiana works with the state’s five regional food banks to connect eligible seniors with boxes and distribution sites throughout Louisiana.

Across Louisiana

More than
31,000

seniors participate in the Senior Box Program.

Louisiana’s food banks help make nutritious food more accessible to older neighbors, including those in rural communities.

Three basic requirements

Could you qualify?

Age 60 or older

Applicants must be at least 60. Ask the food bank what document to bring to verify your age and identity.

Louisiana residency

You must live in Louisiana. A declaration of residency is required; your food bank can help identify the appropriate service site.

Income within the limit

Louisiana uses household income at or below 150% of the federal poverty level. A declaration of gross household income is required.

Not sure about your situation? Contact the food bank before ruling yourself out. Staff can explain the application and current requirements.

Your next step

How to apply for a senior food box.

01 / CONNECT

Contact your food bank

Ask about CSFP or the Senior Box Program. Staff can explain where to apply and which site serves your community.

02 / APPLY

Complete enrollment

Applications are accepted through regional food banks and participating distribution sites. Ask what age, identity, household-income, and residency information you need.

03 / CONFIRM

Plan your pickup

Confirm your enrollment, pickup location, and monthly schedule. If no opening is available, ask about the waiting list and other food assistance.

Visiting this page does not enroll you. Local staff must review your application and confirm availability before you begin receiving boxes.

What comes in the box?

Staples for everyday meals.

Depending on the food package and supply, boxes may include:

  • Canned meat, poultry, or fish.
  • Canned vegetables, fruit, and juice.
  • Cereal, oats, pasta, or rice.
  • Peanut butter or dried beans.
  • Cheese, shelf-stable milk, or dry milk.

Contents vary. CSFP supplements a senior’s diet; it is not intended to supply every food needed for the month. Ask staff about the foods offered and any dietary concerns.

Five food banks. Statewide connections.

Start with your regional food bank.

Ask for the Senior Box Program or CSFP. If you are unsure which food bank serves your parish, use Feeding Louisiana’s food bank directory.

Common questions.

Is the senior food box free?

Yes. CSFP foods are provided at no cost to eligible participants.

Is this the same as SNAP?

No. CSFP provides a food package through participating agencies. SNAP provides grocery benefits on an EBT card. Ask the food bank about both programs and the separate eligibility requirements.

Can someone help me pick up my box?

Ask your food bank how to authorize another person to pick up for you and what information is needed. Confirm arrangements before pickup day.

Is delivery available?

Pickup and delivery arrangements depend on the local program. Ask your food bank about options; home delivery is not guaranteed.

What happens if there is a waiting list?

Ask how to join, keep your contact information current, and respond when staff contact you. The food bank may also connect you with pantry food or other assistance while you wait.

What if I move or miss a pickup?

Contact your program staff promptly to discuss your site, schedule, and participation. Ask when your eligibility needs to be reviewed again.

What if I need language help or disability accommodations?

Tell the food bank what assistance you need. For concerns about service or discrimination, visit Feeding Louisiana’s CSFP resources and complaint procedures.
